Fukuyama on the End of America Inc
Francis Fukuyama discussing another "End", this time not of History (as he is famous for) but of America's essential brand.
I think it is probably true that if America is to regain its position in the world it will be for different reasons than the past. Unbridled capitalism and "Reaganomics" which have been the organizing principles of the past thirty years is going to give way to something new. What that will be is the question.

We come from diametrically opposed political and philosophical perspectives, and yet you are asking the right questions.
I personally have been wary of what I refer to as "free market fundamentalism" for very many years. I opposed Reagan with all my being, as much as I have opposed GWB. To be truthful I didn't care much for either of the Clintons, because I see them as corporatists.
And yet I am also scathingly opposed to Marxism, and fully understand that the horrors which arise from statism will inevitably come to pass in Marxist states because absolute power will corrupt.
And thus I am also wary of a possible over-reaction to what I see as a most welcome end to the Milton Friedman dominated era, with controls on the market which would reduce its capacity to do that which it does do best.
My great hope is that Obama shares my wariness, and will proceed cautiously in creating the limited controls that we do need to check the irresponsibly applied power of corporations.
Though I find fears that Obama is a socialist to be absurdly amusing, HOW we respond to the real need for correct re-regulation is very important, and if managed clumsily, even by well-intended folks, there could be disastrous results.
